HGTV Next Design Star: I want my mommy!

Written by: Rocky

This is my third season of watching Design Star and I have to say I am totally confused with what the judges are looking for this season. Maybe if they had a clear idea of how they are going to judge and informed us, we’d all be on the same page.

Let’s take this weeks challenge. Seven designers were each given a white room to show their design savvy. The catch, it had to have a worldly theme. Six of the designers were assigned one of the following countries: Italy, Thailand or Mexico. One designer had the option of picking any country. Sounds like a fun project, doesn’t it? Not so fast.

Since this is a show for entertainment purposes, the designers had more challenges thrown into the mix.

1. They had exactly twelve hours to design, shop and create their space from the moment they were told ‘time starts now’. No prep time to look over the space and really think about it. They had to go with the first thing that popped into their heads.

2. They were each given $500 and allowed to shop at one store. Now if it had been a pier1 store, one of my favorite stores, this would not seem like a negative. But the store they were limited to was an arts and crafts store with a limited selection of international themed items.

3. They had to use furniture provided which was very contemporary. With more time and access to things like a sewing machine these pieces could have added something to the overall theme, but that was not the case.

As you can imagine, none of the rooms had the wow factor. Most were minimalistic, playing it safe.

You can see the results here: Design Star

Here’s where the confusion starts. Do the judges want functional rooms viewers can replicate at home, rooms that will photograph well, or rooms that show amazing artistic vision? No one knows, not even the judges. I think it’s a case of, we’ll know when we see it.

Again the discussion among the judges before elimination had them referring to someone’s style as ‘grandma’ and tacky. Only one room really captured a worldly flavor and even that room was not authentic to the country intended.

The bottom three…

Michael Stribling designed a modern Spanish club theme. If you google you will find that he was right on the money with his design. However, it did not capture the Spanish culture which was the task. Michael has not had a failed space until this week.

Matt Locke designed an abstract vision of Thailand that was a high concept idea that didn’t work out. That’s the problem with the judges comment ‘Go big or go home’. Sometimes going big can be a disaster and could send you home anyway. Matt has been highly praised until this week. Many believe he is the designer to beat.

Tracee Dore designed a romantic Italian space that was heavy on the theatrical. One judge said it was very cartoonish and another said he really hated it. Tracee has been in the bottom three the last two weeks of this competition.

Sooo, who goes home. Surprise! It’s not the worst designer on the show. This week Michael’s show was cancelled.

So You Think You Can Dance Episodes Streamed Online

Written by: John

UPDATE: Looks like the original reports were wrong and it isn’t going to be streamed on Fox on Demand or Hulu. At least not yet anyway. It’s unfortunate. You can’t even buy it on iTunes or Amazon Unbox. It’s just ridiculous that they wouldn’t provide an online way of streaming So You Think You Can Dance. In the meantime you can stream all the videos from the SYTYCD finale. or click one of the ads on this page and they might have it.

I just found out that the So You Think You Can Dance episodes will now be available online using Fox’s on demand video. This is great news that fox is going to stream So You Think You Can Dance online. This will make watching the show much easier when random events happen that don’t allow me to watch it that night. I just REALLY hope that it’s not only available to stream on Fox on Demand, but that it is also made available on Hulu. That way I can share all the episodes of the show right on this blog.

The Best For Man’s Best Friend

Written by: John

With the latest Contaminated Dog Food scandal I am sure many people have sick animals or have lost their trusted companion. It is not easy to watch our pets suffer. They are a huge part of our families and we want to do whatever we can to help them. My dog, Pumpkin just died recently. She was a member of our family for 15 years. We miss her dearly. I wish I had known of some of the products found at petwellbeing.com. We could have helped her feel more comfortable with her arthritis or helped her terribly bad breath. There are even more amazing products such as ES Clear - Cat Cancer Treatment . It claims to reduce the growth of tumors and boost your pets immune system. For all pet lovers out there I am sure it brings comfort to know that someone is working on helping your pets live long healthy lives.

It’s always nice as a pet owner to know where you can get other products. A whole cottage industry has grown up around pet products. You can do just about anything for your pet that you could do for your child. In fact, in some ways you can do more for your pets than your children. Considering that some people consider their pets their children I guess it makes some sense. I think it’s great that so many great products are available for pets that have been available for humans for many years. I think in the next couple years you’re going to see a bunch of new products that continue to revolutionize the pet products industry. Maybe I should consider changing industries.

Getting Married in Las Vegas

Written by: John

Recently, PayPerPost (PPP) announced a new website where you can get married in Vegas on Nov 18th 2006 and PPP will pay for it. Essentially, you have three weeks to decide and plan a wedding in Las Vegas. I live in Las Vegas and so Vegas weddings are pretty normal. Honestly, I’m always surprised how many people come here to get married. I have a friend from Canada who came down to Las Vegas and got married and now it’s his favorite place on earth. I digress.

I am so surprised that so many people want to have a payperpost wedding. If you take this opportunity and get married in Las Vegas then PPP will give you the following:
* The wedding license and ceremony
* One nights stay at a premium Vegas Hotel
* $1000.00 hard cold cash yours to spend any way you want.
* Your wedding will be taped and streamed
* Crazy PayPerPost antics live for everyone to see.

I told my friend and Las Vegas neighbor Jules that I’d be happy to film the event if she was interested. Turns out she’s really interested in taking Ted up on his offer. I guess her and her boy toy have been talking about getting married for a while. Should be pretty interesting.

I just had an interesting thought. I have never actually met Jules. I’ve chatted with her on IM, on the PPP forums and we’ve commented a fair amount on each other blogs. However, that’s all. How funny would it be if the first time I met Jules was at her wedding? Only in Las Vegas would something this crazy happen for your wedding.

Ok, Ted!! All you have to do now is pick Jules to get married.

Dyson the Major Sucking Machine

Written by: John

I think that everyone pretty much knows about Dyson by now. They have done an excellent job on their commercials being something memorable. They also make the point clear that their vacuum cleaners are able to suck so much better than all other vaccums.

Well, it turns out Dyson has put their sucking machine to good use by creating the Dyson Airblade hand drier. It will allegedly dry your hands in 10 seconds and uses up to 83% less energy doing so. Has anyone ever used one of these? I know I hate using blow driers in batherooms because they pretty much are useless. They don’t dry anything. I don’t mind drying with a paper towel and then doing a blow dryer. However, having a blow dryer that works would be such a novel concept.

I’d love to hear some people talk about their experiences with Dyson products. They seem well made. Anyone swear by it?

Designer Handbags and Purses

Written by: John

I’ve honestly never understood why women would want to have purses. They are bulky and a pain in the butt to carry around. I guess it’s good if you get assaulted because you can use it as a weapon.

Even worse than girls and handbags is girls that want “Designer Handbags.” You know who you are. You just see a bag and have to buy it because it’s so cute.
Designer Handbag
The funny part is that when I came across this website I sent it to my little sister (who really isn’t so little anymore). She absolutely loved the Designer Handbags and asked where she could buy them. Oh….girls and their handbags and purses!!

Come Visit Me and Participate in “The Tells of Poker” Seminar with Joe Navarro, FBI

Written by: John

Las Vegas has to be one of the most unique places in the world. Everyone knows that. In fact, that’s why every type of conference, training event, restaurant and hooker comes to Las Vegas. Everyone wants to at least make a stop here.

Here’s a perfect example. Joe Navarro who taught at CAMP HELLMUTH (famous poker player thanks to ESPN) will be coming to Las Vegas to host “The Tells of Poker.”

Here’s a description of the event:

This is an intense, fast moving seminar, similarily designed to how federal agents are trained. All attendants will receive Joe’s new book written in cooperation with Poker Champion Phil Hellmuth.

Sounds like a unique learning opportunity to me. After the training you might just have to put up a sign at Caesars that says Welcome to Navarro Poker.

Here’s the details on the when, where and cost for the training:
When: November 19, 2006
Where: Caesars Palace, Las Vegas
Price : $999.00

I just love Caesar’s Palace.

The Wellness Zone

Written by: John

At my work they are building a brand new building that is a recreation center along with a health center and counseling center. In the middle they have created an area called the wellness zone. Turns out that I’m in charge of the group that will put together all the technology for the room.

I just found an example of what I’m looking for in this Self Help Book. The website has a cool flash presentation that helps you to relax too. I hope that they create more of these online tools that I can integrate into the new Wellness Zone.

The World’s Smallest One Man Helicopter - I Know the Pilot

Written by: John

I worked with a guy while at college at BYU who flew The World’s Smallest One Man Helicopter. It was an impressive looking machine and absolutely fascinating. I recently ran across his website again and it was fun to think back to my time working with him.

Here’s his picture in the one man helicopter. I hope that he is able to take this technology and create a mass market for it.
