Why Jonny Harline Won’t Produce Anything Spectacular at Tight End

I don’t know about you, but I’m afraid that Jonny Harline isn’t going to be nearly as good as expected. I really think that he’s going to turn out like Todd Watkins did last year. He’s going to make a nice catch hear or there. He’s going to put up some decent yards, but he’s not going to be anything spectacular. He’ll be drafted into the NFL, but BYU’s offense isn’t going to allow him to be spectacular. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid that at the end of the year we are all going to sit back and say that Jonny Harline should have been better. We hoped for more and he couldn’t deliver(or at least he wasn’t given the opportunity to deliver).

Let’s just say that if at the end of the year Jonny is BYU’s best receiver again, then BYU football’s in real trouble.

Interesting perspective. Do you think that Jonny will be so keyed on that he’ll be subject to double coverage? Or are you upset about his opening play fumble? Or, do you, like me, think BYU needs to to to their speed guys on the outside on focus less on dinking and dunking to the H and Y receivers?

Double coverage, hype, position is tight end, dump and dink, all will play a role in this.

I am upset about his friggin fumble, but I started this post before the game against Arizona. The fumble just proved that I was on the right track.

Think about all the great tight ends that BYU has had. I can’t remember when the tight end played a significant role in more than one win per season. Sure, they are an important part, but the tight end position could never satisfy the hype surrounding Jonny.

Not to ever agree with Dick Harmon, but BYU should definitely go down the field more. It opens up everything else. Not to mention it’s exciting to watch. That’s what I miss most about Crowton.
