Todd Watkins in the NFL

After Todd Watkins great performance in the Las Vegas Bowl it begs the question if he is going to be an NFL prospect. I must admit that I have no perspective on what the NFL likes and quite frankly I don’t think the NFL really knows what’s going to make it either after you see the likes of Tom Brady, Steve Young and Kurt Warner winning MVP’s after horrible draft picks(or non-existent ones). I’ll admit here that I really thought that last year’s kicker Matt Payne would be a sure draft pick and somehow I don’t think he ever even got picked up as a free agent. With all the horrible kickers I’ve seen in the NFL I’m still not sure why someone hasn’t picked him up.

Back to Watkins, I think everyone would agree that he has NFL talent and speed. The biggest question is why he couldn’t produce in his numbers this year. His Junior year definitely showed some promise, but his senior year he was third on the team with catches. Ok, Johnny Harline is definitely going to the NFL if he stays healthy, but Watkins should never be behind another receiver. He should have demanded the ball.

I blame the offense on why he didn’t get the numbers. All the short passes or nearly running play passes to Brown and Tahi really seem to hurt Watkins style of play. The rest I give to John Beck on probably looking him off a few times for the sure thing short passes. Either way Todd still should have done something to get the ball. What’s the difference between Reno Mahe and Todd Watkins. Reno always seemed to get the ball even though everyone knew he was our top threat. Maybe Todd should have expanded his game to allow him to get those short passes.

I really don’t know what the NFL will do, but I can’t imagine most NFL teams would want to pass up on the talent and play making ability of Todd. I would love to watch him develop with NFL coaching and NFL skill players where he isn’t the number one receiver, but can create some great plays much like Kevin Curtis from Utah State is doing for the Rams.

In fact, why didn’t BYU use Watkins speed like the Rams have done with Curtis on the end around.

Best of Luck Todd!! Your highlights were great to watch.
