No One Cares Unless BYU Women’s Soccer Wins
Written by: JohnOne of the biggest things I miss about being at BYU and in Provo is that I could go and enjoy a nice BYU sports team play all the time. One of my favorite sports to watch was Women’s Soccer. I liked it even better than the Men’s soccer because it was raw and enjoyable. Men’s soccer was so methodical that it wasn’t as unpredictable and therefore not as much fun to watch.
Well, this year there are high hopes for the BYU women’s soccer team. However, with high hopes that puts a lot of pressure on BYU to win. Fans will start coming out if a team with high hopes wins. Many fans stop coming when the team starts losing. This year they also need to make sure that they are peeking at the right time. The end of the year. Not midseason like last year.
Unfortunately, when it comes to soccer it’s almost like a coin toss. The better team doesn’t always win. So, rather than telling you to play well…I’ll just say…Good Luck!!

BYU Soccer Loses in Premier Development League Playoffs Western Conference Finals
Written by: JohnBYU’s inaugural run through the Premier Development League playoffs ended Saturday night as the Cougars fell to Orange County in penalty kicks 4-2 after playing to a 2-2 tie in the Western Conference finals.
But not until after the Cougars took the Blue Star through 90 minutes of regulation, 30 minutes of overtime and five penalty kicks each, with a pair of late second-half goals — including one in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time.
But Orange County won on the decisive penalty kicks, hitting all of its first four attempts, while BYU managed to make two, miss one and have another blocked by OC keeper Nathan Pena.
I wasn’t sure exactly what BYU soccer was trying to do when they started playing in a league with a bunch of pros when they were ameteurs. It seems to go so against conventional thought. However, if they weren’t going to be able to play in the NCAA then this was the best option. In fact, I would guess now that this has become an even better option than playing NCAA soccer. It’s amazing how far BYU soccer has come since their first season in the Premier Development League.
Congrats on a great year!! Let’s hope BYU football can do much of the same.

BYU’s Ultimate Frisbee Team – Daweena Reunion Tournament
Written by: JohnThis past weekend I went back to Utah and played in an ultimate frisbee tournament called Daweena with a bunch of friends I played ultimate frisbee with at BYU. We were literally the BYU ultimate frisbee team. BYU didn’t recognize us, but all the tournaments we went to called us BYU and so as far as we were concerned we were BYU. I’m not sure if we violated some sort of law against the use of BYU, but we were from BYU so what were we suppose to say?
It was a great day of ultimate. My wife posted a picture and the likes on our Lynn Family Blog. I can’t wait until next year.

BYU Rugby as the Team to Beat in Rugby 2006 Final Four
Written by: JohnI come from Highland High school where being apart of the rugby team is probably even cooler than being on the football team. Highland High School’s Rugby team has won nationals so many times it is pretty amazing. After being in that environment, I was always interested in checking out BYU’s rugby team. They really are something else. The games are fun to watch even if sometimes I don’t quite understand all the rules.
The best part of the rugby team at BYU is that the WIN! This feels like something new for most BYU fans(myself included). Hopefully we’re just going through a dry spell and next year will be better. It’s nice to have a breathe of fresh air with BYU Rugby making it to the final four and the favorites. Let’s just hope the finals aren’t on Sunday again so we can’t compete.

BYU Gets 20 Wins – BYU Meets Utah in MWC Tournament
Written by: JohnWhat a great win against New Mexico tonight! It was quite sad to see the women lose, but that’s not so surprising without Ambrosia Anderson playing. 20 wins could never have been expected. If they grab a couple wins in the MWC tournament then we have a good shot at the NCAA tournament. Otherwise, I guess we’ll have to see how BYU does in the NIT. Although, I’m afraid if BYU does make the NCAA tournament it will be mostly a learning experience for the young BYU team. Next year with some experience I could see some potential for success in the tourney.
I’m not sure about the matchup with Utah. That should be a tough rivalry game for BYU to start the tourney. Let’s hope BYU’s young squad can hold it together in a tournament atmosphere which has shown in past years to have a lot of upsets.
I must also apologize to the BYU team for giving up on them when they were 2-3 in the MWC. I’ll be cheering for you in the tourney. I just wish the MWC tournament was in Las Vegas and not in Denver. Next year things will be back to the way it should be.
Congrats BYU on 20 surprising wins!! Dave Rose for MWC Coach of the Year!

Watch Film with Bronco Mendenhall or Other BYU Coaches
Written by: JohnJust an idea, but I think it would be pretty cool if BYU athletics opened up some time in Bronco’s schedule(even in the off season) for some BYU fans(probably ones who contribute) to some time with Bronco or the other coaches to watch film and have them break down another team or missed assignments on defense. I’d be willing to chip in some money for this experience and even happy to sign some sort of agreement to not release the information I learn. Although from what I hear that shouldn’t be necessary because there really aren’t that many secrets when someone experienced watches film they can figure most of it out. This would be cool for other sports too.

Worst Comments Ever Said by Wives of BYU Cougar Fans
Written by: JohnMy wife today mad the worst comment she has made yet. So, I had to post it here for all to ridicule her.
I told her that I had made a mistake.
She responded, “By being a BYU fan?”
Her next most miserable comment is:
“Why do you watch the games? BYU is just going to lose and then you’re going to get depressed.”
Anyone else have the same experiences?
Missionaries value added maturity?
Written by: JohnMissionaries value added maturity was the title of a recent article
I’m not sure who wrote the article, but they definitely didn’t study missions enough when they quoted one Cal player saying, “No one out there is acting like a little child.” Without disparaging missionaries and the quality of LDS people who understand the importance of working hard, I’ve met a lot of BYU football players who literally act like a little child. If Bronco can help get rid of the arrogance of the team then maybe I wouldn’t make this comment, but I’ve seen otherwise.
It’s not just BYU football, it is returned missionaries in general. There are some good ones and some bad ones. Some that act like children and some that don’t. I would hope for better, but don’t act like they’re immune to childishness.
Long Work Days
Written by: JohnI was reading an article about Cal football before the Las Vegas bowl and it said that the coaches at Cal were putting in 19-hour days throughout the year to prepare their football game. That is just amazing to me. I hope these men aren’t married, because I pity their wives. Last night I was watching the making of 1 minute of Star Wars Episode III and it made me so grateful of the work that I do. You could tell they were working long long hours and working on super complex tasks. I’m sure they get paid well, but I wonder what they’re doing to their family.
I hope Bronco doesn’t do that. It seems like I recall an article quoting Lavell Edwards where he talked about how he found it important to have a life outside the film room. For all the wifes out there I hope this is the case.
CougarTV?
Written by: JohnBYU has announced the new CougarTV which is a great idea. I mean it’s basically what I suggested in one of my recent postshttp://www.crashutah.com/byu/crashutah/2005/12/17/byutv-and-rebroadcasting-byu-games/
The only problem I have with this new CougarTV is that they don’t have any games worth watching. I’ve commented on this before in a previous post. They need to get Men’s Basketball or Men’s football on there to get me to pony up some money for the games. Sure, it would be fun to watch the Men’s Volleyball team, but probably not worth the cost. Baseball and softball are just not nearly as fun on tv as the real thing. If I’m on my computer I’m pretty sure my multi tasking mind is going to stop watching the game and do something else. Plus, how about BYU go outside the box and start doing like the church has done so well and offer the games free. Advertising should pay for it. I know I’d be willing to click on some advertising to help offset the cost.
