A Look at the BYU Men’s Basketball Schedule

Written by:

Thanks to BYU winning another close one (Translation: overtime win) to Weber State, I decided to take a look at the BYU basketball schedule to see what’s to come. BYU’s currently 4-2 with loses to UCLA (which is a quality loss) and Boise State which may or may not be bad. here’s the teams the games they’ve played so far.

11/02/2006 Brock University
11/08/2006 Univ. of Montevallo
11/10/2006 Cougar Tipoff
11/15/2006 @ UCLA
11/18/2006 Idaho State
11/22/2006 Portland
11/24/2006 Southern Utah
11/29/2006 @ Boise State
12/02/2006 @ Weber State

Looking at the rest of the non conference schedule I think BYU is going to have a really hard time. San Jose State and Western Oregon are the only possible cupcake games, but I bet those games will be closer than we’d like. Michigan State, Seton Hall, Liberty, Oral Roberts, Lamar and the always challenging in state rival Utah State is a pretty brutal schedule if I’ve ever seen one. I’m personally really excited to see what happens. Unfortunately, I’m afraid were going to go about .500 through this part of the season and need to perform well in conference to have a chance to make the NCAA tournament. It’s just a guess, but that schedule looks pretty brutal at this point in time.

12/06/2006 San Jose State
12/09/2006 @ Michigan State
12/13/2006 @ Lamar
12/16/2006 Utah State
12/22/2006 Western Oregon
12/28/2006 Liberty
12/29/2006 Oral Roberts
12/30/2006 Seton Hall

Here’s the MWC schedule. It’s not looking good for me personally since my wife is due with our second child on 1/17 and BYU is playing UNLV on 1/13. Barring a baby I’ll be enjoying a game. Otherwise, I’m glad to see Utah at the bottom of the list at home on six days rest.

01/06/2007 San Diego State
01/10/2007 TCU
01/13/2007 @ UNLV
01/16/2007 Wyoming
01/20/2007 @ Colorado State
01/24/2007 @ New Mexico
01/27/2007 Air Force
01/31/2007 @ Utah
02/03/2007 UNLV
02/06/2007 @ Wyoming
02/10/2007 @ TCU
02/14/2007 New Mexico
02/21/2007 Colorado State
02/24/2007 @ San Diego State
02/27/2007 @ Air Force
03/03/2007 Utah
03/06/2007 @ MWC Tournament in Las Vegas

BYU and Utah’s Prep Utah Football Recruits

Written by:

It’s nice to see that winning on the field is paying off for BYU football recruiting. The SL Tribune published the list of recruits and where they’re headed for college:
James Aiono, Murray Utah
Braden Brown, Highland BYU
Scotty Ebert, Jordan BYU

Mike Honeycutt, Lone Peak Utah
Austen Jorgensen, N. Sanpete BYU
Star Lotulelei, Bingham BYU
Eathyn Manumaleuna, T-view BYU
Jordan Pendleton, Bingham BYU
Houston Reynolds Timpview BYU

Griff Robles, Spanish Fork Utah
Jordan Smith, Spanish Fork BYU
*BYU recruits are in bold

The top Utah prep athlete that hasn’t committed is Cottonwood’s Simi Fili. From reading the article it will take a miracle for Simi Fili to commit to BYU or Utah. It’s kind of like the chances of beating Utah with a nice scramble, a throw across your body to the other side of the field to a kneeling tight end for the win. Well, you can’t have everything.

14 Million Reasons the MWC Should Have Gone After Boise State

Written by:

If you’re reading this blog then you probably already know that Boise State has crashed the BCS and will be in a big money bowl in January. When I talk about big money we’re talking about $14 to $17 million. That’s not too bad. Of course this doesn’t take into account the name recognition that will be achieved by going to a BCS game that is watched by millions.

Hindsight is 20/20, but the MWC should have gone after Boise State. The $14 million isn’t the only reason. Boise State is a natural fit for the Mountain West Conference. Boise State has the two most important sports covered.

Their football team is obviously first rate or they wouldn’t be going to a BCS game. I can’t tell you how great it was to watch Boise State stomp the Utes this year. It was a thing of beauty.

BYU’s loss to Boise State in basketball shows that their basketball team is going to be pretty good this year also. At least there going to be better than TCU. Sure, I know that Boise isn’t nearly as big of a TV market as TCU, but let’s be honest. I lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and I never saw TCU on TV and barely even knew that they existed. People in Texas cheer for Texas and Texas A & M. It doesn’t matter where you live. Those are the two choices. On the other hand, Boise’s only sports outlet is Boise State. I don’t care about Boise State really, but if I lived in Boise you’d find me at a lot of games.

Don’t worry. I forgive you MWC. Just go out and add Boise State to the fold.
