What’s Wrong with This BYU Athletics Post

Today I was interested in a headline from BYU Athletics that said: Ticket, Broadcast Information for NCAA First/Second Rounds I was excited to see what was going on with BYU Women’s Volleyball team. I love volleyball and so I was interested in seeing where it was available to be seen. Here’s what it said:

Following the Cougars
Several options will be available for following BYU’s NCAA First/Second Round run. A live Internet video stream will be provided free of charge. In addition, a BYU Radio Internet audio stream will be available as well as live stats. Links for all three can be found by going to the Schedule page of the BYU women’s volleyball homepage.

Do you see something missing in the above information? How about linking us to a free internet video stream? How about linking us to the Internet audio stream (although if you’re not family then I’m not sure why you’d want to see this)? Well, for all those who don’t want to go searching, I did it for you. However, even on the main BYU women’s volleyball homepage they only had the Audio stream and the live stats. No video. Here’s the links for what’s available.

Now good luck finding the date for the game too. The “press release” didn’t even mention the date that these games were being played. Looks like Jen Connery from BYU Athletic Communications needs a little help communicating. Turns out the game is on Thursday, November 30 at 5:00 PM.

Go Cougars!!

BYU vs. Utah Highlight Videos

I should have posted these a while ago, but it’s worth looking at again. Just watching it makes me want to call me Ute loving Uncle. I’ll embed the Google video of BYU vs. Utah highlights. Below that is a link to a high quality stream of the same video.

High Quality Stream of BYU vs Utah Video Highlights

Johny Harline Making the Final Catch

Final Play of BYU vs. Utah Game

The quality isn’t the best, but youtube has a video of the final play from the BYU vs. Utah game. Utah Ute tears and all.

I could watch that play over and over. Beck’s arm strength is amazing. How did Harline get so wide open? This play will live in BYU football lore forever.

Thank you John Beck!!

Why BYU Football Had a GREAT Season

BYU Beat UTAH!!

That’s about all that matters right now!!

What a Wonderful season!

No CSTV - Try Streaming it Online

I don’t think anyone should be deprived from seeing the BYU vs. Utah rivalry game today. If you don’t have CSTV in the area then you probably thought that you were up a creek. Well, you’re not. There are a number of online streaming options for those that are like me and need to catch BYU football finally taking it to Utah.

Live Online Pay-Per-View
BYU Athletics announced that they would be having a live online stream for $14.95. You can purchase this option here. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but my guess is that if you have a decent internet connection this option should be fine.

Free Online P2P Stream
I’ve been playing around with a Live P2P TV stream called TVU Player. It’s not the highest quality and sometimes freezes up, but it is better to see video of the game than it is to only hear it on KSL. If you don’t have a broadband internet connection then you probably don’t want to try this option.

Stream KSL Radio
If you don’t like any of these options then you can at least listen to it KSL’s radio stream of the game.

Well, the options aren’t quite as good as ESPN, ABC, CBS or some other major network, but it will have to do for now. At least we can look forward to the Las Vegas Bowl being on ESPN this year. Too bad that won’t help me since I’ll be at the game, but I’m not complaining.

A Little Ute Trash Talk

I’ve been playing Fantasy Football with my friends I worked with at BYU and one of them posted a few comments that I thought were worth sharing. It’s in the context of Fantasy Football, but I think you’ll get the point.

I have to admit, I’ll be glued to the internet next Sunday watching the fantasy matchup of the year between Turfbiters and Flamingidiots. This is on par with Ohio State vs. Michigan, Ali vs. Frazier, you get the picture. Why, it’ll be bigger than the BYU vs. Scum of the Earth game next week….k, actually, strike that. Probably not, and I doubht I’ll be worrying about anything in fantasy football other than making the playoffs. But even that won’t matter if we beat the Pukes from up North. One thing we all have in common is Blue blood, and All I can say is FOUR years of incessant red yapping is enough. We need to destroy, maim, and mutilate those pansies. Conference Title is sweet, but what’s a cake without the icing. The other team in the state of Utah needs to go down, and go down hard. Best, most classic good vs. evil, Middle Class vs. Trailer Trash, Blue vs. red matchup next week. Scoreboard.

Thanks Scott!!

Must Beat Utah

I don’t know about the rest of you out there, but I found the New Mexico game quite boring. Sure, it’s nice to have BYU go undefeated at home. It’s really great to win the Mountain West Conference outright and to do it the second to last game of the season. I also really like that BYU got invited to the Las Vegas Bowl. It’s a great venue and about 3 minutes from my house. Yes, I’m biased, but that’s ok. Despite all of these factors the New Mexico game was boring.

Let’s be honest, last week all that any BYU fan really wanted to do was look ahead a week to the Utah game. BYU’s lost to Utah 4 years running and it’s time for BYU to annihilate Utah. I don’t want to see a close game. I don’t want to see BYU take it easy. I want the full on BYU offense taking it to Utah. I want John Beck throwing for 400 yards. I want Curtis Brown and Fui Vakapuna (I’m too lazy to look up the right spelling so I hope that’s right) to run for a couple hundred yards. Who doesn’t love when Tonga runs over players?

The thing I want most if to be able to call my Uncle and congratulate his Utes on losing. Is that too much to ask for?

Watching BYU vs. UCLA on ESPN Gamecast

Many of you internet users should be familiar with ESPN’s gamecast. At least I think that’s what it’s called. It’s basically a place where you can watch the scores, stats and play by play of a game. Well, I was stuck in class for the BYU vs. UCLA basketball game. I was lucky to have a relatively flaky internet connection that allowed me to watch the play by play on ESPN gamecast.

Here’s my take on the game just watching the play by play listed on ESPN gamecast. By the way, I would love the video of the game if someone has it, but I digress.

BYU didn’t seem to take good shots to start off the second half and that’s why UCLA got back in the game.

When it was close BYU got the ball to our star in the post Plaisted and he couldn’t deliver. I wondered why I didn’t see his name coming up at all. I found out later it was because he was in foul trouble.

As UCLA really started to pull away BYU panicked and Broadus jacked up a three to try and keep it close.

There were way too many turnovers in the second half for BYU to win.

The first half BYU shot lights out, especially behind the 3 point line and that’s why they were in the game.

UCLA needs to work on their free throws.

How did I do without seeing the game?

Quotes from the BYU vs UCLA Basketball Game

Here’s some quotes from after BYU’s loss to #6 UCLA.

“We got disoriented in the second half with running our stuff,” second-year BYU coach Dave Rose said. “Their pressure late in the game didn’t allow us to get the ball where we wanted on the floor.”

“This was like an NCAA (tournament) game, except we were at home,” said coach Ben Howland, who is 4-0 in season openers at UCLA. “I have no doubt BYU will be in the tournament at the end of the year. I hope we don’t have to play them.”

“That’s a great team,” Young said. “We came to see where we were with the big teams, and we were with them.”

I Don’t Believe It

Read these 2 quotes and tell me if you believe what Jimmy Balderson and Dave Rose are saying about the game against UCLA tonight.

“It’s a historic building, it’s a historic team,” said senior guard Jimmy Balderson. “You dream about playing in games like this when you’re a kid. This is exactly how we want to start the year. We want to play the best because we want to be the best. We have high expectations and we want to play a good team.”[emphasis added]

The first game out, I think we need to play someone that will challenge us and we can find out where we’re really at,” Rose said. “This will be a challenge. It’s a situation where we have a lot of work to do. We’ll be a lot better team in December than we are right now. But it will give us a pretty good idea of where we are.”[emphasis added]

Can you really believe that BYU wants to play the #6 team in the nation for their first game? Look at the following 2 scenarios.

Scenario 1 - BYU Loses
Losing is never good for a team. Sometimes teams make the most of it, but losing your first game of the season after working so hard all off season in my book will never be a good thing. In fact, losing the first game can be depressing for a team. Even against an opponent that is much better than you, a loss is still depressing. I would suggest that losing to a great time is even harder because it can totally kill your confidence. It can make a team feel like they are even worse than they really are. Either way, I dont’ think this is “exactly” how you want to start the season or that you “need” to play someone that will be a challenge for your first game.

Scenario 2 - BYU Wins
Of course this is the preferred scenario of the 2. I know I would enjoy this and I have to admit that it is possible that a win like this could give a team a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. However, it also sets a tough standard for the rest of the season. If we later go on to lose to a mediocre team like Utah (I had to throw that jab in there) then everyone will say what happened to the team that beat UCLA? A win against this team tonight will make us think that we have a team that’s going to go far in the NCAA tournament. However, being realistic that only sets us up for disappointment. Without a miracle, I think the best we can hope for this year is a win or two in the NCAA tournament. Anything more and I’ll be calling it a miracle and getting some more food storage.
