BYU Soccer Loses in Premier Development League Playoffs Western Conference Finals

Written by:

BYU’s inaugural run through the Premier Development League playoffs ended Saturday night as the Cougars fell to Orange County in penalty kicks 4-2 after playing to a 2-2 tie in the Western Conference finals.

But not until after the Cougars took the Blue Star through 90 minutes of regulation, 30 minutes of overtime and five penalty kicks each, with a pair of late second-half goals — including one in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time.

But Orange County won on the decisive penalty kicks, hitting all of its first four attempts, while BYU managed to make two, miss one and have another blocked by OC keeper Nathan Pena.

I wasn’t sure exactly what BYU soccer was trying to do when they started playing in a league with a bunch of pros when they were ameteurs. It seems to go so against conventional thought. However, if they weren’t going to be able to play in the NCAA then this was the best option. In fact, I would guess now that this has become an even better option than playing NCAA soccer. It’s amazing how far BYU soccer has come since their first season in the Premier Development League.

Congrats on a great year!! Let’s hope BYU football can do much of the same.

BYU’s John Beck and McKay Jacobson, Utah’s Eric Weddle garner all-MWC top honors

At the recent Mountain West Conference annual football media blitz it was announced:

BYU picked up a pair of individual accolades, with quarterback John Beck being named Offensive Player of the Year and wide receiver McKay Jacobson earning Freshman of the Year recognition. Utah safety Eric Weddle was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Year.

Beck and Weddle were known commodities and weren’t any surprise. The exciting part is what McKay Jacobsen could be. John Beck’s comparing him to Austin Collie. I hope that’s not a fair comparison. I hope McKay’s better than Austin.

As of this post: 43 Days 19 Hours until BYU kicks off the season!!
