Missionaries value added maturity?
Written by: CrashUtahMissionaries value added maturity was the title of a recent article
I’m not sure who wrote the article, but they definitely didn’t study missions enough when they quoted one Cal player saying, “No one out there is acting like a little child.” Without disparaging missionaries and the quality of LDS people who understand the importance of working hard, I’ve met a lot of BYU football players who literally act like a little child. If Bronco can help get rid of the arrogance of the team then maybe I wouldn’t make this comment, but I’ve seen otherwise.
It’s not just BYU football, it is returned missionaries in general. There are some good ones and some bad ones. Some that act like children and some that don’t. I would hope for better, but don’t act like they’re immune to childishness.
Cal Defense
Written by: CrashUtahGregory took the Cal defense from 110th in the nation(sounds like UNLV this year) to eighth in the nation 3 years later. Impressive stats. They played well against USC and held Reggie Bush to half his season total. That sounds good, but the Pac 10 was in a down year this year and with a new defense put in I’m not expecting the same success. Look for Cal to allow a lot of points.
BYU’s Texas Tech Offense Against Cal’s Defense
Written by: CrashUtahLast year Texas Tech rolled up 45 points and 597 yards of offense against a more experienced Cal defense. While I’m not sure we’re quite Texas Tech’s offense yet, I expect a nice high scoring affair that will be enjoyed by all(as long as the cougars wins).
Long Work Days
Written by: CrashUtahI was reading an article about Cal football before the Las Vegas bowl and it said that the coaches at Cal were putting in 19-hour days throughout the year to prepare their football game. That is just amazing to me. I hope these men aren’t married, because I pity their wives. Last night I was watching the making of 1 minute of Star Wars Episode III and it made me so grateful of the work that I do. You could tell they were working long long hours and working on super complex tasks. I’m sure they get paid well, but I wonder what they’re doing to their family.
I hope Bronco doesn’t do that. It seems like I recall an article quoting Lavell Edwards where he talked about how he found it important to have a life outside the film room. For all the wifes out there I hope this is the case.
BYU Cougar Offense
Written by: CrashUtahEveryone that follows any BYU football knows that the cougar offense is potent. In fact, people who don’t know much about BYU would probably say that BYU has a potent offense. This year they can finally say that again. Pre-season touted Watkins as a great deep threat and a great receiver to watch. I must admit that I love Watkins and wish that Beck could get him the ball more. Unfortunately, with Crowton out of the mix the offense is very different under Anae’s Texas Tech style offense. Instead, watch for Johnny Harline to have a career day in the Las Vegas Bowl.
However, BYU has something more important than passing(which may come as a surprise). They MUST rush the ball. If John Beck doesn’t turn around and hand the ball repeatedly to Curtis Brown he’s making a big mistake(or more importantly Anae is). Give him the ball and let him take care of business. Otherwise, it’s going to be a long day for the offense and a lackluster performance for BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Beck Knew he was Bowl Bound
Written by: CrashUtahBeck was quoted in a recent article that he knew he was bowl bound. If that was the case then why couldn’t he come out Curtis Brown style and let the rest of us fans know that they were going to a bowl. My wife would have really appreciated knowing it so it was worth watching. Either way, I’m glad he was right, but I’d like it documented better next time.
CougarTV?
Written by: CrashUtahBYU has announced the new CougarTV which is a great idea. I mean it’s basically what I suggested in one of my recent postshttp://www.crashutah.com/byu/crashutah/2005/12/17/byutv-and-rebroadcasting-byu-games/
The only problem I have with this new CougarTV is that they don’t have any games worth watching. I’ve commented on this before in a previous post. They need to get Men’s Basketball or Men’s football on there to get me to pony up some money for the games. Sure, it would be fun to watch the Men’s Volleyball team, but probably not worth the cost. Baseball and softball are just not nearly as fun on tv as the real thing. If I’m on my computer I’m pretty sure my multi tasking mind is going to stop watching the game and do something else. Plus, how about BYU go outside the box and start doing like the church has done so well and offer the games free. Advertising should pay for it. I know I’d be willing to click on some advertising to help offset the cost.
Burgess Lost
Written by: CrashUtahI agree with a recent article about the loss of Burgess this season. He really is going to leave the cougars without a big man in the middle. I can’t really understand his reason in the middle of the season. Unless there’s some rule I don’t know about(which is very possible) then he is going to lose this year of eligibility anyway. He might as well stay in excellent shape and do his best for the team.
That said, I think if they system doesn’t fit him right then please do whatever’s best for you and yours. Maybe you could just explain to the rest of us why leaving the team helps you in any way. Playing against Div I opponents should be a priceless experience for you regardless of the offense that is being run. At least get in there and practice your defense. It’s not going to get any better sitting at home.

BYUTV and Rebroadcasting BYU Games
Written by: CrashUtahI’ve been really pleased with a new website for BYUTV that allows you to watch the BYU Television feed on the internet. It was fabolous to watch the First Presidency Christmas devotional from home. My only requests is that they start putting BYU games on there. I’d be fine if they even do it a few days later. Living outside of Utah we just don’t get tape on many games(espescially basketball) and it would be nice to see the team on video because it’s a different experience.
Weber State Win
Written by: CrashUtahA dominating performance throughout. I was most pleased with BYU’s ability to not just coast through the second half. They actually outscored them in both halfs. We still had poor starts in both halfs and that’s dissapointing. This is a nice win and it is great to be at 6-2. Where do we go from here? I’m just really scared of that Air Force team that is always a miserable game.
