Big American Apparel Deal from Groupon

The deal is $25 for $50 worth of clothing and accessories from American Apparel. The fine print is that this is limited to 1 per person, and that it is not valid on multi-packs, California Select Vintage, Multibrand products or shoes. It is for online redemption only on the U.S. site.

That’s what you call a great deal. You can also just click the banner. It should update to the latest and greatest Groupon Deals!

Shutting Down Smuggle Me…Mostly

I must admit that it’s kind of sad to think that I’ll be basically shutting down this blog. Smuggle Me (this blog) was the first blog I ever created. It’s the start of what has become my blogging empire (a small empire, but an empire just the same). Who would have thought that me just playing around with WordPress one day would later become my full time job and me traveling to present at WordCamp Utah and Las Vegas.

Yes, my first post was June 2, 2005. Although, the post I remember most was when I posted that I beat my sister in Solitaire Showdown. Good times and great memories of the start. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 5 years already.

Don’t think I won’t be blogging anymore. I just won’t be blogging on Smuggle Me anymore. Instead, you can see my work blog at CrashUtah. That’s my new and relatively professional blog that I’ll be writing. Plus, you can follow all of my other blogs which are listed here.

I’ll still be posting here on occasion. This is basically my test blog where I test new plugins and updates. So, I’ll continue doing that. Otherwise, Smuggle Me will go pretty quiet. It’s been a great ride!

BuddyPress Disable Email Activation – My First BuddyPress Plugin

As those of you who follow my Twitter account probably know, I’ve been diving head first into the BuddyPress development side of things as I build my Sports Fundraising website. So far I’ve made some amazing progress and I’m quite happy with my choice of BuddyPress as a platform for this project. I guess we’ll see how it goes once I launch the site in July.

In my process, I’ve created a number of BuddyPress plugins, but mostly just for internal use. I hadn’t written any for the public yet. So, today I decided to take some code written originally by Andy (founder of BuddyPress) and add in one piece that he was missing and make a plugin (he told someone to).

So, here’s the first release of the plugin: BuddyPress Disable Email Activation (download here). I’ve tested it and it seems to work, but I welcome any feedback.

Unfortunately, it only disables the email activation for a standard WordPress install (with BuddyPress of course). I’m still working on getting the WordPress MU email activation to be disabled too. I’ve got most of it disabled, but can’t get the email to stop sending (see more details of this problem here). If I figure that out, then I’ll likely incorporate it into this plugin as well.

Until then, enjoy my first BuddyPress plugin. Now I’m going to figure out how to post it to the WordPress plugin repository.

Marketing on Facebook – Fan Pages versus Group Pages

I’m doing some research on using Facebook to market. I’m interested to learn more about people’s experience using Facebook to market. I’d love to hear what you’ve found works and doesn’t work.

Some more specifics of things I’ve been considering is the different between a Facebook Fan page versus a Group page. My understanding is that Group pages are kind of the “legacy” pages that Facebook is slowly phasing out and moving to Fan pages. Is this true? If not, why would you use a Facebook Fan page over a group page or vice versa?

From what I can tell, it makes more sense to have a Fan page. If group pages are indeed being phased out by Facebook, then a Fan page is even more important. However, how do you best make the transition from a group page to a fan page? It’s unfortunate to lose all of those followers when you make the switch. Is there a way to keep all your followers and just convert your group page into a Fan page? If not, Facebook should make a tool for this.

One other question is, “does it matter which category your Fan page is in?” I imagine like most people you could put your fan page in all sorts of categories. Sometimes the categories match great, but most fan pages could be in a number of spots. Does it really matter? Seems to me that it would only matter if you were the top Fan Page in that category maybe?

Ok, there is a start for the discussion. Anyone have some other thoughts on engaging people on Facebook as well?

WordPress on the Blackberry

I just got a Blackberry and I’m surprised how much I like it. Today I decided that I’d try out the WordPress app for blackberry. So, this is my first blog post from the blackberry.

I like it since now I’ll be able to do a lot more blog posting during down time. The small keyboard is kind of a pain, but it’s manageable. The only problem I see with blogging like this is that it’s harder to add links to blog posts also.

Are there any other must have Blackberry apps? I already have email(of course) and Twitter. I also use I’m quite a bit as well. I think I want to look into a Mint.com app if there is one. Are there others I should get?

Nice Video of A 5 Year Old Playing Violin Around the World

This came across my twitter stream and I just had to post it. In the same kind of theme as Where the Hell is Matt?, this video shows a little girl playing the violin all over the world.

I bet the stories they can tell are even better than the video. You can read more about the video and this little girl on the soultravelers3 website.

$60,000 Worth of Software Free

A nice link came across my Twitter feed that talked about 45 open source or free software packages that a business could use. They valued the 45 software packages at over $60k. The cool part of the list is that it lists the paid option alongside the free option.

I knew most of the things on the list, but it had a few that I’d never heard of and I’m going to have to check out. If you are a startup company today, you have to be crazy to be spending much if any money on software these days (with a few minor exceptions).

One software that I wish was on the list was a nice video editing software. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a good free and/or open source video editing software out there.
