Writing a Novel

A week or so ago I got an interesting email from my little sister. She wanted to borrow our Asus eee (basically a little computer) since she really wanted to finish a novel she’s been working on for a while. I don’t know if my sister knows what she’s getting herself into. I think I might need to ask my friend in New Orleans to talk to her about writing a novel.

Anyway, my sister isn’t giving me many details about the novel. I think it’s because she’s writing some smutty romance that she knows I won’t like. That said, I do love seeing people live out their dreams. So, we sent our little computer to her. This should be interesting. I’m going to tell her that in return for borrowing the computer I want 20% of her book sale royalties. Seems reasonable to me. I wonder what she’ll think.

Yeah, I can talk to your sister about writing a novel. Even a smutty romance novel. :)

But *do not* ask for her royalties or face my wrath. ;”) An agent already gets 15-18% and unless you’re getting a huge advance or Oprah picks you, it’s hard to make a living off writing. Especially considering an author may get *maybe* $2-3 of a $25 dollar book.

You are perfectly entitled (in my mind) to ask for a free signed copy and a thank you in the acknowledgments. For being such a good, supportive brother.

Didn’t know I was gonna try to school ya, did you? ;”) Thanks for the shout out!

Nice schooling. I know that writing a book is like music. Too many people in the middle.

I wouldn’t ask for anything. I know her and I know she’s very generous and kind. So, she’ll remember me somehow;-)
