Something Kind of Similar to PayPerPost

Someone emailed me about a website called Pick A Blogger. It’s a cheap attempt to compete with PayPerPost. I didn’t sign up, because it didn’t seem like there was really anyone on the site. It was like a ghost town. I’ve often said about PayPerPost that they needed to focus on advertisers and making sure there were plenty of ways for bloggers to make money. They’ve done that and done well. Unfortunately I don’t think that Pick a Blogger has done the same thing.

Ugh. Anytime I see “pick” I see “nose” so…yeah. I’ll pass.

Thanks for writing about Pick A Blogger. You are right about it being deserted right now, but the attempt has been to gain support from enough bloggers in order to attract advertisers. It is a vicious cycle wherein Bloggers dont come till the advertisers do, and the advertises don’t till there are enough bloggers.

PayPerPost should have experienced similar problems when they launched over a year back. However we at PickABlogger would try to get our learnings quick and set up quicker.

Your welcome Anand. I understand your problem quite well. I was on PayPerPost when they first started the program and so I know what they went through to get advertisers.

I’ll let you in on what I think the key to their strategy was. Ted Murphy, the founder of PayPerPost, worked previously for a marketing company (I think officially he owns it) called MindComet. So, he took the contacts and contracts he had with the marketing company and used those to create the initial advertiser opportunities. My guess is that MindComet had talked with their clients about advertising on blogs and so they were willing to try it out.

I’ve never heard Ted really say that this is the case, but I can tell you that for the first month or so I could see that 80% of the sponsored posts I took were from clients listed on MindComet’s website.

The other secret Ted used was to have a BUNCH of PayPerPost sponsored posts. It was them using their own system and also them attracting more bloggers.

Good luck on getting Pick A Blogger going. I wish you all the success possible. The more people the merrier. Competition is good for bloggers in this case I think.
