Continuity of Operations Plan – Does Anyone Know What That Means?

This last week at school one of the ladies in my class was making a comment and she said the phrase, “Continuity of Operations Plan.” The professor, who barely speaks English, just listened and nodded when she said it. Everyone in the class just listened and I think they must think she is so intelligent.

Man alive. Can anyone please tell me what a Continuity of Operations plan is? I’ve never heard that term before in my life. I think she was talking about a disaster recovery plan, but she should use the proper terminology when she’s talking. I hate when people make up phrases that no one else understands. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Oh well, it gave me a good laugh in class and good blogging material.

I’ve always heard “Continuity of Operations Plan” as a disaster recovery plan for government. If the governor steps in front of a bus, who’s in charge? What if that guy’s down with the flu? What if the state capitol building just fell into a sinkhole? What if all the state police were all inside for an event when it happened?

I am currently doing a Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and it is the government term for Business Continuity Plan (BCP). The government just likes being different and using more words.

Disaster Recovery (DR) is similar, DR usually refers to either IT or a major catastrophe, like terrorist attack or blizzard shutting the town down. A COOP or BCP can be for anything, like the first floor of a building being flooded because a pipe burst.
