Craigslist Owner Won’t Sell Out
Written by: JuanchitoCraig Newmark of the wonderful website called Craigslist made some really interesting comments in a recent CNN.com article. Here’s my favorite part:
“Who needs the money? We don’t really care,” Craig Newmark said in an interview at the Picnic ’06 Cross Media Week conference here.
“If you’re living comfortably, what’s the point of having more?” Newmark said.
I think this has to be one of the most impressive things I’ve heard out of someone. I still don’t understand how craigslist can afford to function at no cost to its users. Where’s the revenue to pay for the site. That is amazing to me. I’m sure there’s something out there that I don’t know about. Anyone want to fill me in? I don’t feel like searching google right now.
I must admit that I agree with him completely. I recently interviewed for a new job that would have paid a lot more money. I decided against it because I love my current lifestyle. It’s great. I think that money will come. All in good time. For now, I’m happy with where I’m at. Spending time with family is so much more worthwhile right now.

Short answer: people told me some years ago, we should just charge people already paying too much money for less effective ads, elsewhere.
We charge for help wanted ads in three cities right now, four more next week; also charge apartment brokers a token fee for rental listings only in NYC.
thanks!
Craig
You are my hero techie! Craig posted on your blog!
WOW!! Julie, I’m just as amazed as you. Thanks for commenting on my blog Craig. I figured one of my loyal readers would answer my question. Little did I know that Craig would answer the question for me. I guess Craig didn’t mind that my blog does PayPerPost.
Back to the topic at hand…
How sweet is it that Craig only makes money by offering people a product that costs less than what they would get anywhere else? I wonder if he is going to design a way that Craigslist will remain free or if one day when Craig is no longer involved someone will sell out?
I know I’ve sold a ton of items on Craigslist. In fact, when I moved from Hawaii we pretty much sold everything we owned. At least 50% of it was sold on Craigslist.
Craig,
If you’re ever in Las Vegas, let me know and Julie and I will take you out to lunch or dinner.
