Facebook vs. LinkedIn

Written by: Juanchito

A ton of people have been writing that many people are now using Facebook for business networking and that facebook will prove a major challenge to LinkedIn in the future. I personally don’t see LinkedIn going anywhere. Should LinkedIn keep an eye on facebook? Absolutely. Facebook could be a great place to do business networking. However, Facebook will never be LinkedIn.

I even saw this well written article about how to move your LinkedIn contacts to Facebook. Honestly, I just don’t see people doing it. I guess it depends on how you’ve used facebook in the past. People like Michael Arrington from TechCrunch and super blogger Scoble seem to be using facebook mostly as a means to extend their other online projects. However, most people use Facebook for social networking and probably don’t want Facebook information making it to their LinkedIn profile.

I personally don’t want some of my Facebook profile showing to potential employers. It certainly wouldn’t be life or death, but whoever found it would have to understand that Facebook is a place for my to goof around and have fun. It’s not how I am in the work place. For example, on Facebook I recently used the question app and asked visitors to my facebook profile “Do you think my tractor’s sexy?” I think many employers might not understand that. Especially if they don’t like country music. However, in the end I don’t think it would prevent me from getting a job if my resume, references and skills were up to par.

I am interested to see how the announced LinkedIn application will work. I wonder when they’ll finally be able to get that out.
