The Next Net 25 – The Next Google and Yahoo

I think it’s a really interesting idea to look and see which businesses are going to be the next Google and Yahoo. CCNMoney has done that for us in their recent list of the Next Net 25.

Here’s a few samples from the list:
Company: Digg (San Francisco)
What it is: News aggregator
Next Net bona fides: The site’s links are picked by the readership, which has been doubling every three months; news items with the most votes make the homepage.
Company: Newsvine (Seattle)
What it is: Collaborative publisher
Next Net bona fides: Readers vote and comment on stories but can also organize their own pages and write their own stories, for which they collect 90 percent of associated ad revenues.
Company: Simply Hired (Mountain View, CA)
What it is: Job search engine
Next Net bona fides: It searches nearly 4.5 million listings on other job and corporate sites; subscribers receive an RSS feed or e-mail alert when a job that meets their parameters pops up.

Plenty more interesting companies to look at. The real question is how many of these companies can survive without getting gobbled up by Google or Yahoo?

Google Maps and a Wiki Bang Heads

I recently ran accross a nice google mashup that essentially applies the idea behind a wiki to a map. I love the idea that physical objects can be publically editable and you can mark what everything is on the map. Can you imagine going to a new place and just checking WikiMapia to see what everything is. Since Italy is my favorite place in the whole world, I could see how this would be so useful in Rome where everything is literally a piece of history. What a great tour guide this could be.

For now, it is fun to go around and see interesting places in the world. Just don’t show this to my father. He’s already addicted to finding places on his own.

Google Analytics Finally!!

As many of you may know already Google bought a nice statics program called urchin a long while ago and changed the name to Google Analytics. Well, they were offering this statistical program for free initially, but there was such a large number of people interested in free statistics that they stopped giving it out free while they could plan for more users. About a 2 months ago I submitted a request to be put on their virtual “waiting list” to be able to use their statistical tool as soon as they had enough capacity for me.

Much to my surprise this week I got an email from google analytics saying that I can finally use this wonderful free service. I signed up today and put it on a couple of my websites. I am a little nervous because I’m not sure my footer code is just before the tag like it is suppose to be. It should be close. Yes, it was a poor web design and yes it was my first real php website. I also wanted to add it to my various blogs. I decided to start with one and I thought I might as well just use a plug in since there was one out there. So far it doesn’t seem to be recognizing it. Maybe I’ll have to do it manually. The plug in seems so simple that I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t work. It didn’t error on me so at least that’s good. We’ll see what happens.

In the end, I’m not too concerned about the google analytics because I love BA Stats (Beta) for my WordPress blogs. Honestly I’m addicted to those stats. I love seeing what happens and they seem quite reliable. I’m not sure why it is beta and there are a number of enhancements I’d like to make. I’m not sure why someone hasn’t taken it to the next level. Maybe I should do that for my first step into wordpress plug in writing.

Buy Real Ultimate Discs Online

My wife has often wanted to buy me or friends an ultimate frisbee disc that is of high quality. Everyone that is reading this should first know that anything that says Whamo on it should barely be considered a frisbee and definitely not cost you any money to buy. If you find one then it is worth keeping so you having something for dogs to chew up or something to play in the streets. Otherwise, don’t ever mix up a whamo frisbee with a quality frisbee.

So, you may be asking what is a quality frisbee. Well, first you should know that I’m talking about a frisbee for ultimate frisbee. There are plenty of other choices for Disc Golf. Yes, there is a difference between ultimate and disc golf. I’ve been surprised how many people don’t know that. Oh what an uneducated world we live in. I digress.

Today I happened accross a nice website that actually sells high quality Discraft discs for ultimate frisbee. If it doesn’t say discraft then be careful what you’re buying. If you want to buy me a gift then buy me the glow in the dark ultimate frisbee.

Gas Prices Suck

I hate gas prices. I am the epitomy of why gas prices continue to rise. I’m going where I need to go. Gas prices barely effect my decision to do so. I did find a nice new website for the lowest gas prices in an area.

Here’s a link to the Henderson, NV gas prices.

Book Lists

A long time ago I found Guy’s list of favorite books. I thought it was a neat list to look over. However, I thought the idea of people creating their list of top books was even more interesting. Seems like a startup around this idea could be pretty interesting and monetize pretty well.

Of course, I’m still waiting for Google to provide me all the books free. Although on second thought, top 10 blogs might be more interesting for me at this point. I like the real time feel of blogs.

Free TV Downloads – Can this really be legal?

I’ve been waiting for this to finally happen. Free TV online. I tried an episode of Greys Anatomy and it worked great. I still like to see them live, but when I have something and miss an episode of a show I’ll be certainly looking here to see any episodes I missed.

I’m really not sure if it is legal or not, but it is definitely cool. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be legal since all of the commercials are still intact. I don’t see it as much different than recording a tv show using a tape and VCR and sharing it with a friend. I can’t wait until this kind of TV is standard and live.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Skype, eBay Inc.’s Internet telephone subsidiary, is extending its reach with “Skypecasts” — free audio conferences for up to 100 participants.

Skype is used mainly for person-to-person calling but also has a conferencing feature for up to 10 people, who can all speak at the same time. A Skypecast, however, will be moderated by a host who controls when someone can speak.

The service launches Wednesday in an “early preview” form, said Skype’s vice president of global marketing, Saul Klein.
